It’s a beautiful Monday morning and I wanted to share a few good reads with you.
What’s funny is if you would’ve asked me even a year ago if I’d be sharing what books I’m reading with someone over the Internet, I would’ve laughed.
I was that kid in school that used Sparknotes on EVERY single book project I ever had.
Up until about a year ago, I can’t confidently say that I had ever really finished a book front cover to back cover.
^ that’s how much I use to hate reading…
But once I realized that reading a book is like paying a few dollars to get inside the mind of the author, everything changed.
I started understanding the arbitrage opportunity at my fingertips to get millions of dollars worth of advice for less than the price of dinner.
If you’re not learning, you’re dying… and books are one of the best ways to learn in life!
So, with that said… here’s what I’m reading right now:
A book all about “category design” and how the Uber’s of the world go onto dominate their market… this book has me feelin’ some type of way.
The whole thought of designing your own category in a market has my head turning with ideas and I honestly haven’t been able to shut it off for several days in a row.
I’ve found myself furiously scribbling notes all around my apartment…
I even texted my brother (who works in an ‘outdated’ industry that moves slow) an asked him to send me a list of problems he encounters.
Play Bigger has me thinking on a whole new level outside of this “internet marketing” space… and I’m starting to realize how small this space really is.
Being fully transparent with you, my plan has shifted a little bit.
My goal is to go the “Ryan Deiss” sorta route in business…
Build my wealth over the next few years as an internet marketer selling digital products & consulting… use that as a springboard to go build something in it’s own category… sell it… become a passive investor / advisor…
at least, that’s my vision for now.
Last note on this book: it’s crazy to me how many parallels there are between Play Bigger and Expert Secrets.
Two different perspectives on how to become the “go-to” in your market, which means a lot of lightbulbs are going off that didn’t previously go off when I read Expert Secrets.
I’m about halfway through this one and highly recommend it.
I just started this one last night as a way to ‘press pause’ on Play Bigger (my mind needed a rest).
This is suppose to be one of the best direct marketing books from legendary copywriter Gary Halbert, so I’m pumped to dive in further.
Two notes so far:
1) I didn’t realize these are the letters Gary wrote to his son Bond from jail
2) I find it fascinating that the first two letters from one of the best copywriters to ever live were all about health & exercise
It was a big slap-in-the-face as I know it’s easy to neglect our health as entrepreneurs.
But, as they say… “health is wealth!”
Go kick some ass this week…
Rooting you on,
Austin aka the Yoda of Marketing
